Nha Trang to Da Lat by Motorbike: The Khanh Le Pass Route
Published on 8 August 2026

From the sea to the mountains, from 30-degree sunshine into cool mountain mist — riding from Nha Trang to Da Lat is one of the most rewarding motorbike journeys in Vietnam. In roughly 135 km along highway QL27C you cross the Khanh Le pass, which many riders rank among the most beautiful passes in the country. Bike Nha Trang has gathered practical experience to help you prepare properly for this ride.
The QL27C route at a glance
The journey breaks into three clear stages:
- Nha Trang to Dien Khanh (about 10 km): leaving the city westward on flat, busy roads — ride slowly and stay alert.
- Dien Khanh to Khanh Vinh (about 35 km): the plain opens up, with sugarcane fields and villages on both sides. This is where you rest and fill the tank one last time — there are almost no petrol stations on the pass itself.
- Khanh Vinh over the Khanh Le pass to Da Lat (about 90 km): the best part. The pass climbs for nearly 30 km up to around 1,500 m, then rolls across pine-covered highlands into Da Lat.
Pure riding time is about 4–5 hours, not counting photo stops — and you will stop often.
Khanh Le pass: a wall of clouds between sea and flowers
Khanh Le marks the border between the coastal climate of Khanh Hoa and the cool highlands of Lam Dong. Climbing it, you feel the air freshen with every kilometer. Stops worth making:
- Sweeping hairpin bends overlooking the deep valleys on the Khanh Vinh side.
- Small waterfalls spilling right beside the road after the rainy season.
- The section near the summit, where clouds often drift across the road like smoke.
Beyond the top the scenery changes completely: pine forest, chilly air and highland vegetable farms tell you Da Lat is near.
What to prepare
- Warm layers and a rain coat: the pass and Da Lat can be ten degrees colder than Nha Trang, and mountain rain arrives fast.
- A full tank at Khanh Vinh: do not gamble — the pass is long and remote.
- Your ID and driving license, carried on you.
- Gloves, a windproof visor or glasses, closed shoes instead of sandals.
- A fully charged phone with the shop's support contact saved.
As for the bike: pick a newer, stronger scooter such as an NVX, PCX or Air Blade for a long mountain road. Most importantly, tell Bike Nha Trang in advance that you plan to ride to Da Lat — the shop will recommend the most suitable bike, double-check brakes and tires before you set off, and explain how to get assistance along the way if you need it.
Safety on the pass
- Start early (6–7 am) to avoid the afternoon fog on the summit — visibility can drop sharply after 3–4 pm.
- Descend by pulsing both brakes gently rather than dragging them — constant braking overheats them.
- Watch for buses and trucks on blind corners: hold your lane and give a light horn tap before tight bends.
- In rain or thick fog: slow down, lights on, and do not hesitate to wait it out at a roadside cafe.
Should you do it in one day?
Technically possible, but 270 km round trip with a mountain pass in a single day is exhausting. The sweet spot is 2–3 days: leave Nha Trang early, reach Da Lat by lunch, give the city of flowers a full day, then cruise back down to the sea at your own pace.
The Nha Trang–Da Lat run belongs on every rider's list. Choose a strong scooter from the Bike Nha Trang fleet, share your travel plan with the shop, and let the most beautiful pass in Vietnam tell the rest of the story.
